E93 - Is the ”Retail Apocalypse” Overblown?

For the past 5 years or so, the "retail apocalypse" headlines have been all over the news. These stories have included several large brick-and-mortar retail stores all across the US in multiple sectors. However, this may not paint the whole picture. The negative light the media is painting of the industry sounds like the picture it was painting of the real estate sector in 2010 when it was the most favorable time to invest in real estate in the history of the US.

Our guest for today is Mark Mascia who is the Chairman and CEO of Mascia Development. He has over 15 years of experience in real estate and is principally responsible for managing the investment, capital structure and investor relations activities of Mascia Development. Mark has been featured in The New York Post, NY Real Estate Journal, the Real Deal, and the Cincinnati Business Journal. He is also a frequent speaker on real estate podcasts, including many of the most popular podcasts on iTunes.

Today we are going to discuss...

  • What the current state of the industry is
  • What some of the underwriting standards are that our guest uses for downside protection
  • Some of the takeaways our guest has learned dealing with some ultra-high net worth real estate family offices
